Dao Yao Zui - Sound-reactive visuals
Individual ProjectSound-reactive visuals
Touchdesigner
I designed the overall visual design and the technical aspects of audiovisual interaction
This project is an exploration of synesthetic translation between sound and image, inspired by the song Dao Yao Zui and the surrealist and symbolic visual worlds of Joan Miró’s The Birth of the World and Henri Rousseau’s The Sleeping Gypsy.
Through layering chromatic shifts, geometric fragments, and gestural strokes of points, lines, and planes, the piece constructs a visual language that mirrors the grotesque yet poetic nature of the music. The resulting atmosphere is one of eerie strangeness—like a black fairy tale unfolding in sound and light.
Technically, the work employs audio analysis in TouchDesigner to map specific frequency bands and percussive elements to visual transformations, including rotation, scale, density, and opacity. These mappings generate an evolving and reactive visual field, where sonic structures materialize as painterly, shifting forms.
